Weight Loss

Many health groups around the world are advocating that doctors and the AMA backs doctors, in telling their patients they are fat, instead of overweight or obese. This might sound offensive to some people but the reasoning is that when patients are told they are overweight or obese it doesn't really register to them the seriousness of the situation.

Being overweight has its problems such as the life threatening conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and strokes. Chronic illnesses such as diabetes, arthritis, gout, stress incontinence and cataracts to name a few can make for a very sick life. What doctors have been finding too, is that there is not just one chronic illness that will strike an overweight person but many and often in conjunction with others at the same time. Progressive, poor health is common and more often than not, depression will accompany these illnesses.

Perhaps overweight and obese people should be told they are fat. Would this actually kick start them into gear to lose weight, get fitter and clean up their lives or would it drive them to the potato crisp bag and the tv for comfort? As a society we have become so politically correct that we mustn't offend, slander or abuse people. Under this political correctness we have also come to the point where we won't tell our loved ones or friends they are fat. Fat carries an implication of revolt - that the fat person is revolting.

Regardless of what overweight and obese people should be told by their doctor, it would be really great for them if they could get a whole community, their family and friends to back them and support them in their quest for weight loss. Thinner people never know what the big person goes through. Let's support big people and help them lose weight now, today, this week.
